I feel that the base colour should be a dark greyscale colour, almost black. The softer details should be highlighted by lighter greyscale colours but staying away from pure white as I think it would ruin the look. Think more mid-greys. The Mech needs to have the typical glowing lights. It just has to be done! I think ideally one colour would be fine, such as the bright light blue demonstrated above. If using two colours we don't want any clashes to occur. I've been trying to think what would work against the film's scenery. I think the light blue would work well against the browns, oranges and reds of the mars landscape.
